450 word statement

Statement  Manchester to me is “mini London '' but warmer, smaller and more exciting. Growing up visiting Manchester on a regular basis with my parents I feel it has become my second home. From shopping with my parents when I was younger, to venturing to the northern quarter and living as a city worker for a week, I can safely say I love Manchester. Equally the passionate, and diverse population of Manchester alongside the fast expansion of the city and so many different architectural styles and job opportunities I would relish the opportunity to study in Manchester. Recently visiting the Tadao Ando building in Piccadilly gardens I left feeling underwhelmed. I’d argue that Tadao Ando’s design does not invite a tranquil entrance the park should hold, rather it does the opposite. I believe that instead of dividing the urban landscape, trams and bus stops from the park he created a monument that highlights such segregation and completely misses the point of it’s intended use. The ...

"Perfection" I drew this still life in pencil, I titled it perfection as It displays the constant issue many creatives face not feeling fulfilled within our ideas. The crumpled paper displays my constant disregard for ideas and frustration through the burst paint, whilst the dying plant highlights the negligence to my own health and those around me. However my wabi sabi inspired pot reminds me of the beauty of imperfection, embracing the process, something I have improved greatly upon over the last year.

"Respiratory Sports Hall" I have included a handful of my favourite initial and developed sketches of my current project, this is my major project for year 13, I am designing a sports centre for Manchester university as they lack any current sporting courses and is a great opportunity to boost intake. I am designing a building with muscular strands surrounding the exterior which will contract and constrict depending on the intensity of the sun allowing shade within the building, similarly designed structures will be inside contracting and constricting allowing interesting and evenly dispersed airflow. These take inspiration from the muscles surrounding the lungs and the bronchioles within the lungs themselves.

"Bird Hide" here we were given a broad brief with just the site location and to connect the inside to the outside. After much site analysis and research I decided to design a bird hide taking inspiration from the birds nest itself, here I have included my final model, initial concepts and the development. I'm proud of how much I believe I have progressed since last year in terms of perceiving things from a much deeper abstract lens whilst remaining logical, this project taught me perseverance and the initial steps in designing a building.

"A5 ARCHWAY" I decided To draw three drawings of the archway the heart of our school, the bridge between day and boarding students, I have drawn it at three differing scales and three different styles.

"Axonometric" Here is my A3 axonometric drawing of the archway in pencil.

"15" here is my fifteen minute sketch of the archway in marker

"Walls" I took three photos over the course of three minutes compiling and layering them to highlight the patterns and configurations that occur within architecture. Many of the people walk near the edges of the building (seen at the top and bottom) leaving the central space desolate, I feel this is an interesting observation and as an aspiring architect I would like to challenge this isolated and nervous feeling many people feel, incorporating ways to force more interaction within the middle space which remains silent.

"Infected generation" - I wrote a poem a year ago during the first lockdown highlighting how the media ignited much racism within people and caused a generalised racism to anyone who was asian. This piece is representative of that poem highlighting how the younger generation are moulded from birth to be racist by the hands of the media, the uterus bag bursting and pouring into the hills of china is also representative of our UK COVID death toll, how many people were blaming china for our mounting deaths. Whilst the roofs of the buildings can be read from two different perspectives highlighting how many things that were said were lies and often racist.

"storm covid" - This 3d sculpture displays the impact that COVID-19 has had on the UK economy, how the hospitality, highstreet and small businesses have come under storm having to shut their doors losing money and their businesses, whereas large online retailers and corporations have soared and seen the light under COVID’s hands.

"Arch" this project was titled "protection of something I deem to be of value" and to me it was my jewellery, when surveying people I found there was a divide many people were more worried about their jewellery getting scratched, but many were worried it may get stolen. I designed Arch as a disguised jewellery stand hidden by the outer core - a sculptural vase.

"Neck brace" Here is my final digitally drawn presentation board in response to my neck brace project brief, alongside this there are a few initial and developed sketches showing my process. This was the first project I completed at the start of year 12 and hadn't learnt CAD at this point and took it upon myself to digitally draw the end result.
